One of the things I hear from expats living in Spain is – ‘the Spanish don’t do things correctly’. However the truth is that things are just done differently than the way we’re used to.

It’s normally a lack of understanding on our part, and this site will endeavour to make things clearer for you as far as the world of insurance is concerned.

I will guide you through the different types of insurance, giving advice on some of the main areas relating to these topics. For example, I will provide my understanding of how the Spanish State Health System makes provisions for expatriates.

Different legislation for different countries

You are free to insure your car, home or self with any insurance company within the European community. However, those companies must be registered in their home countries and must provide the minimum legal requirement set out by Spanish law.

If a claim is disputed then this will normally be dealt with in the country where the insurance company is registered. For that reason I would always suggest that you look for all types of insurance from a company that is registered here in Spain.

Spanish insurance companies will of course have a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to arranging insurance in their own country. Historically they have also offered some of the lowest costs for cover in Europe.
